Learn how to start SCD™ with confidence so your child can feel better and live better

THE SCD KICKSTART SYSTEM

Hi, I’m Beth Secosky from POSSIBILITIES for Autism. I’m a mom who helped my son reduce the symptoms of autism using the Specific Carbohydrate Diet™ (SCD) and I'm the author of the SCD Kickstart System. Since starting SCD, my son's and our family's quality of life has been transformed. After my son started getting better, I dedicated my career to getting out the word that SCD transforms lives and to making the implementation of SCD easier, so parents can get started successfully and make SCD a long term lifestyle.

If you have a child on the spectrum (or a variety of other attention, behavior or mood conditions such as ADD/ADHD, anxiety, or learning disabilities) like me, then you’re probably worrying about your child for one reason or another right this minute. Maybe you got a call from the school today; maybe your child was rejected in a social situation; maybe your child is in pain with a distended belly, or maybe you want more than anything to be able to speak with your child.

I know these worries first hand from when my son had more severe sympoms of autism. (He's mostly recovered now.) I've also had the thrill of watching my son's symptoms fade to the point where these worries no longer consume my days. My mission is to give you everything I wish I'd known back in 2011 when we started the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. That's why I created the SCD Kickstart System to simplify SCD for parents like you.

My Background: Making Change Easier

Prior to becoming a health coach, I worked in Organizational Development, and one of my core areas of expertise was helping organizations make changes more easily.

In that work I used a proven method for making change easier. I've taken that proven method for the work place and applied it to implementing SCD in the home so you can get started successfully with confidence.

If you're anything like me, you've probably read or been told:

Autism is a life-long disease.

Digestive symptoms are just part of autism.

Autism is genetic, and there’s little you can do about it.

“___ therapy” is the only proven treatment that might be able to help.

The problem with all of these statements is that they are opinions, not facts. They are based on the belief that your child was just “born that way” and none of them consider the root causes of your child’s challenges such as speech problems, behavior issues, focus, and stimming.

We now know that there is a clear connection between the gut and the brain. Healing the gut leads to improvements in brain function thus improving conditions such as autism, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities and more.

Healing the root causes starts with bringing down neurological inflammation by stabilizing the gut flora, enhancing the immune system, and decreasing toxins. The first and most important step in treating these causes is by implementing a version of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) that is customized for your child’s needs.

When my family started following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, my son’s severe stomach pain was gone in a matter of days. Within 3 months, he no longer needed his special education aide in his classroom, and he had no more violent tantrums. My daughter’s severe anxiety and yeast disappeared. My migraines and other aches and pains became rare, and as an added bouns, I lost 45 pounds.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet works plain and simple, but it’s a little different for every person – especially people with autism who may have food allergies or are picky eaters.

SCD takes some customization to maximize its benefits for each person. Missing simple but necessary adjustments can cause many people to give up and lose hope, thinking their child will never be able to handle sensory input, social situations, or speak.

I felt compelled to put my “real world” experience and success in healing our son to help many other families from around the world do the same.

The SCD Kickstart System is a 4-step program based on my unique experience in helping people to successfully change their lifestyle in order to enjoy a better quality of life as their “new normal.”

With the SCD Kickstart System, I will walk you through exactly how to implement SCD in a way that is straightforward and simple, so you can be successful.

Better Gut, Better Life

Here are some of the improvements that children and adults with autism and other conditions have experienced on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet:

IMPROVED SPEECH

Children on SCD often see improvements in speech within a few months of getting started. Whether your child has not yet spoken or speaks with an impediment, SCD can help take speech to the next level.

DECREASED PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS

Digestive issues, pain, rashes, frequent ear and other infections, allergies, inability to gain weight and other physical symptoms usually improve or resolve when the flora is balanced.

IMPROVED MOOD/FEWER TANTRUMS

Children with an unhealthy gut flora often experience anxiety, sadness, and irrability which can lead to frequent tantrums. Improving the gut flora can lead to improved mood, fewer tantrums, and more playfulness.

ENHANCED COGNITIVE SKILLS

Brain fog and other cognitive skils such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment often improve with a healther gut. The gut-brain connect is real.

OVERCAME PICKY EATING

Many children with autism and related conditions are picky eaters who gravitate to dairy, sweet or starchy foods that feed the pathogenic microbes in the gut. Picky eating improves quickly when the gut flora improves.

THRIVED AND STABILIZED WEIGHT

Some children are underweight and/or below a normal height for their age. Healing the gut allows for better absorption of nutrients leading to appropriate weight gain and growth.

Other children are over their desired weight. The reduction in carbohytrates on SCD allows their weight to stabilize.

But my child has no disgestive symptoms...

Autism and related conditions are symptoms of a gut flora that is out of balance whether there are obvious digestive symptoms or not. SCD is all about balancing the gut flora which brings down neurological inflammation and reduces symptoms of autism and other attention behavior or mood conditions.

Here’s what parents like you have to say about the

SCD Kickstart System:

"SCD has been one of the most effective interventions we’ve used in recovering our son, and I wouldn’t have been able to make that leap from GFCF to SCD if it wasn’t for Beth’s SCD Kickstart System. Our neurotypical daughter is such a picky eater, I couldn’t imagine how our family could make the switch. The SCD Kickstart System gave me the courage to give it a try – even with my picky eater.

My husband was resistant to the idea of SCD, but after seeing some of the SCD Kickstart System videos, he decided he wanted to give it a shot. We’re so glad we did! Our 5-year old son has blossomed every day since we started. On the very first day, he ate eggs for the first time. On day 3, he started making eye contact. Before we knew it he was pulling our hand to get what he wanted instead of screaming and then he started asking for what he wanted verbally. After allergy testing, we further customized his SCD, and we saw a significant decrease in stimming and squealing.

I am so grateful I found the SCD Kickstart System."

Allison

"My family started SCD on February 13, 2016. It has been a short time and I cannot imagine my life without it anymore.

I faced the same challenges and insecurities that you are probably going through now: “I have picky eaters at home”, “I am not a good cook”, “I work full time and don’t have time to make meals”, and my favorite one is “My son would never eat soup”. This is my favorite because when I met Beth, I literally told her: “It would be impossible for my son to eat soup”. Beth looked at me, and said: “It would be difficult but not impossible”. Four months later, I started SCD and my son is now eating soup!

Since then, my three kids have begun to enjoy SCD foods. My youngest daughter who is 6 years old complains if we don’t have brussel sprouts on the table. My oldest daughter (10 years old) has created some SCD recipes, and my son who is 8 years old and has autism has improved in many ways: He is stimming significantly less, he is talking more, his attention and concentration are longer, and he is having fewer and less intense meltdowns.

Autism is definitely a puzzle, and we do many other therapies and treatments with our son which are all part of the puzzle, but with SCD I know I found a big piece that helps the others fall in place more easily. A special diet is essential if you have a loved one on the spectrum, so do not wait to start one!"

Svetlana

"It’s nice to see my brother happy, talking a little more and paying attention to some games; even my mom looks skinner and taller, and she is more patient."

Natalie, 10-year old neurotypical sister

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a medical diet based on over 30 years of microbiology and digestive research that has helped thousands of people stop the symptoms of digestive diseases. SCD brings down inflammation and thus brings down the neurological inflammation inherent in autism.

Dr. Sydney Haas developed SCD in 1920 and described the principles of SCD in his 1951 book, “The Management of Celiac Disease.”

Elaine Gottschall, the author of Breaking the Vicious Cycle, was a dedicated mom just like you, and her daughter was a patient of Dr. Hass. With his help, she healed her daughter’s ulcerative colitis using SCD and became so interested in its effectiveness that she became a biochemist and cell biologist and researched SCD for over 30 years.

Her groundbreaking book expanded on the work of Dr. Haas explaining the science behind the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and even includes a chapter named, "The Autism Connection."

The guidelines of SCD have been healing people all over the world since the 1920s, and top autism practitioners recommend it as a core medical intervention for autism. Dr. Sydney Baker has said, "SCD is the best treatment that I have found so far for many children on the Autism Spectrum."

A Principle You Must Know for SCD Success

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is not a one-size-fits-all program – especially for kids on the spectrum who have multiple food sensitivities. My son was sensitive to 69 foods back when we started SCD.

It may be that your child will have great results by following SCD as it’s described in the book – but most of us have to fine-tune SCD to fit our child’s needs.

I designed the SCD Kickstart System to help you create your own custom version of SCD, so you don’t find life passing you by without seeing the progress you really want for your child and your family.

Another Success Story

"The "SCD Kickstart System" helped give me the determination to start SCD for my child with autism and eventually my whole family. My son is a 14-year old with autism who was living on gluten-free junk food for years. If we can do it, anyone can.

The program broke SCD down into easy steps , so I was much more calm than I would have been as I implemented it! My son can't have eggs or nuts. The SCD Kickstart System helped me see how to plan foods that he can have. Beth's motto that "SCD is a starting point. A customized diet is the destination" helped me envision an SCD diet for my son that works around his sensitivities.

Living on SCD has been a life changing experience! My son eats more healthy than anyone I know, and the improvements in his health, happiness, and behavior are the results!

My only wish is that I could have had the SCD Kickstart System 5 years ago when I assumed that SCD is impossible for a child with nut and egg allergies."

But what if SCD still doesn't work for my child?

Once you've spent some time in Step 4, you'll probably be seeing some remarkable improvements in your child's health and behavior. But, there is that possibility that you won't yet be seeing the results you expected. Should this happen, you to invest in a 1:1 consult with me, and we'll troubleshoot together and figure it out. These situations are uncommon, but when they happen, it's usually a food or a family of foods that are the culprit.

That happened with Svetlana. In the early days on the SCD introductory diet, her son, Evan's stimming reduced dramatically. However, as time went on, the stimming returned. He was better, but not where they had hoped to be.

Svetlana could have given up, but instead, she called me and scheduled a few 1:1 coaching sessions so we could troubleshoot together. Svetlana and I figured out that there was a category of foods allowed on SCD that were still bothering Evan, and she pulled out those foods. We also determined that he could tolerate cheese, so they added cheese back in.

Now, Evan is thriving on SCD. Not only are his stimming and other symptoms much decreased, he is speaking in paragraphs and even telling stories whereas, he had only single words before.

But, you still may wonder, "What if we troubleshoot, and SCD still doesn't work for my child?" At any time in your process, if you feel that you need advanced troubleshooting support, I will refer you to a SCD practitioner who has over 20 years of experience helping parents with SCD.

In the end, you'll be proud of the healthy foods your famly now loves, and you'll know that you've implemented the SCD correctly so you can chart a new course for healing based on your child's unique biological needs.

Personalized Coaching Clients are Saying...

"Our doctor recommended starting SCD/GAPS for my son who is 8 years old and has autism. I started to read about the diets, and all of the information was overwhelming! I did not know where or how to begin. I then approached Beth Secosky, who gave me hope by telling me about her own experiences with her child and family. She opened a door to new possibilities not only for my son on the spectrum but for my whole family.

Beth guided me through the Specific Carbohydrate Diet step by step; she provided clear information, useful videos, and priceless advice that show her knowledge, experience and passion for what she does. The support I received from Beth not only equipped me with valuable tools for the diet but prepared me emotionally to start it, and along the way she held my hand unconditionally, keeping me motivated and moving in the right direction.

I highly recommend Beth to anyone who is seeking not only to improve their child’s autism symptoms but also to simply live a healthier life in general."

-- Lee

"I was intrigued by the SCD diet, but I couldn’t imagine how I could ever pull it off while sharing custody with my daughter’s father. Beth made it possible. She helped me get my ex-husband on board – an almost impossible feat. Then, she taught me everything I needed to know to get started – where to shop, what to buy, how to prepare the foods, how to manage die-off and more.

My daughter was the pickiest eater I have ever seen. Within 2 months of starting SCD, my daughter was eating a number of vegetables and other foods she had nevfknowgger eaten before. Other miracles started happening. Her painful constipation resolved, and her eczema disappeared. She was released from 5 years of speech therapy, and is now reading at grade level for the first time.

Best of all she is the happiest she’s ever been, and she doesn’t ask to go off the diet.

SCD has changed my life too. My almost unbearable stomach issues have cleared. I now sleep well with no more medication, and my anxiety is much improved.

I’m so glad I took the time to give SCD a try. I could have never done it without Beth’s support."

-- Leah

"My daughter with an ASD is finally making the progress I’ve dreamed of. I tried SCD a year ago with her, but it was too tough doing it alone. Once I had Beth’s support, I was able to deal with all the roadblocks that stumped me before.

Beth helped me get my daughter, a picky eater, to try new foods, and she helped me frame the diet in a positive light. My daughter now eats foods I never dreamed she’d eat, and she is proud that her food choices are so much healthier than her peers.

The biggest thing Beth helped me with was dealing with die-off. When the pathogenic bacteria started dying, my daughter was a mess. Beth helped me stay the course by sharing strategies to slow down the die-off and keep my daughter comfortable.

Taking this journey with Beth at my side is the best investment I’ve made while recovering my daughter."

-- Amy

"When we started the gluten-free diet a few years ago, it was a huge struggle. I knew that if I struggled with going gluten-free, I would definitely struggle with SCD, so I called Beth to see if she could help us. Beth gave me everything I needed to get going: information, support, encouragement, trouble-shooting.

Even though SCD is a much more difficult lifestyle change than going gluten-free, SCD was so much easier this time around because of Beth’s support. I could have never done it without her

We dealt with daily diarrhea for years, and on day 39 of SCD, I realized that we were having consistently normal BMs, gut pain was gone and behavioral symptoms were much decreased. SCD has been one of the best things that has ever happened to my family!"
